Objectives for this lesson:
1.
Given a set of whole numbers and the formula mean = sum of the numbers ÷ number of numbers, students will calculate the mean of a data set with at least 80% accuracy.
2.
When given the mean and the number of numbers in a data set, students will determine the total of the data set by with at least 80% accuracy.
3.
Using tables, number sentences, or written calculations, students will organize data and show step-by-step working to calculate the mean and/or the total of the set of number with 80% acc.
4.
During group activities and class discussions, students will demonstrate confidence and cooperation when solving mean problems by actively participating and explaining their thinking respectfully.
Important terms to remember
Mean/Average
The mean (or average) is found by adding all the numbers together and then dividing by how many numbers there are.
The mean is the fair share of a group of numbers.
👉 Think of it as sharing numbers equally so everyone gets the same amount.
🧠Example:
Numbers: 4, 6, 8
Add them: 4 + 6 + 8 = 18
There are 3 numbers
Mean = 18 ÷ 3 = 6

Sum of the Numbers
The sum of the numbers is the total you get when all the numbers are added together.
The sum is what you get when you add everything up.
👉 Example:
5 + 7 + 3 = 15
The sum is 15

Number of Numbers
The number of numbers tells how many values are in a data set.
This means how many numbers you are working with.
👉 Example:
In the list 2, 5, 7, 10
There are 4 numbers

“Count how many numbers there are.”
