Objectives for this lesson:

1.

Given the length of one side and the formula perimeter = side × 4, students will calculate the perimeter of a square with at least 80% accuracy.

2.

When given the perimeter and the formula side = perimeter ÷ 4, students will determine the length of one side of a square  correctly with at least 80% accuracy.

3.

Using rulers, grid paper, or digital drawing tools, students will measure and draw squares and label their sides and perimeter with at least 80% accuracy.

4.

During group activities and class discussions, students will demonstrate confidence and cooperation when solving perimeter problems by actively participating and explaining their thinking respectfully.

Important terms to remember

Perimeter

The formula for the perimeter of a square is:
Perimeter = side × 4

A square has 4 equal sides, so you can find the perimeter by multiplying one side by 4.

👉 Example:
If one side is 5 cm:
5 × 4 = 20 cm
So, the perimeter is 20 cm.

A Square

A square is a four-sided shape where all sides are equal in length and all angles are right angles (90°).

A square is a shape that has:

  • 4 equal sides

  • 4 corners that look like the corner of a book

👉 Every side of a square is the same length, and every corner is a perfect square corner.

🧠 Easy way to remember:

“A square is fair—everything is equal!”

  • To find the length of one side of a square, divide the perimeter by 4:
    Side = perimeter ÷ 4

  • If you know the perimeter, you can find one side by sharing the total equally among the 4 sides.

  • 👉 Example:
    If the perimeter is 24 cm:
    24 ÷ 4 = 6 cm

  • So, each side is 6 cm long.
