Objectives for this lesson:

1.

Given real-life word problems involving fractions, students will explain and apply the algorithm for multiplying fractions with at least 80% accuracy.

2.

Using fraction models, number lines, or written algorithms, students will correctly demonstrate the steps of the fraction multiplication algorithm to solve real-life problems by completing all steps correctly in 4 out of 5 problems.

3.

During guided practice and real-life problem-solving activities, students will show confidence and persistence when solving real-life problems involving multiplication of fractions by actively participating and attempting all assigned tasks.

Important terms to remember

Of

In mathematics, the word “of” often means multiply, especially in fraction problems.
When you see “of” in a math question, it usually means you should multiply.
👉 Example:
½ of 10 = ½ × 10 = 5
🧠 Think:
“Of means multiply.”

Times

The word “times” is another word for multiply.
Times tells you how many groups of a number you have.
👉 Example:
4 times 3 means
4 × 3 = 12
🧠 Think:
“Times means multiply.”

Product

The product is the answer you get when you multiply numbers.
The product is what you get after multiplying.
👉 Example:
5 × 6 = 30
So, 30 is the product.
🧠 Think:
“Product means the answer.”

Simplifying a Fraction

Simplifying a fraction means changing it to an equivalent fraction with smaller numbers, while keeping the same value.
Simplifying a fraction means making the fraction easier to read and work with, but it still means the same amount.
You do this by dividing the top and bottom by the same number.
👉 Example:
                        2/4=1/2
Both show the same amount, but 1/2 is simpler.
🧠 Think:
“Make it smaller, but keep it the same.”

Group Activity

How to work together:

  • Work in groups of three.

  • Talk about each problem before writing the answer.

  • One person types, another checks, and another explains the steps.

  • Show working for every question.
