Objectives for this lesson:

1.

Given numerical and word problems, students will solve multiplication problems involving two-, three-, and four-digit numbers multiplied by two-digit numbers with at least 80% accuracy.

2.

Using place-value charts, area models, or written algorithms, students will correctly apply the written multiplication algorithm and mental strategies to multiply two-, three-, and four-digit numbers by two-digit numbers in 4 out of 5 problems.

3.

During guided practice and independent problem-solving activities, students will show confidence and perseverance when multiplying two-, three-, and four-digit numbers by two-digit numbers by attempting all assigned problems and participating actively in discussions.

Important terms to remember

Multiplicand

The number that is being multiplied.
The multiplicand is the number you start with and are making groups of.
👉 Example:
In 4 × 6, 4 is the multiplicand.
You are making 4 groups.
🧠 Think: “How many groups?”

Multiplier

The number that tells how many times the multiplicand is taken.
Child-Friendly Explanation:
The multiplier tells you how many times to use the first number.
👉 Example:
In 4 × 6, 6 is the multiplier.
It means each group has 6.
🧠 Think: “How many in each group?”

Product

The answer you get when you multiply.
The product is the total after you multiply.
👉 Example:
4 × 6 = 24
So, 24 is the product.
🧠 Think: “The final answer.”

Times

A word that means multiply.
Times tells us we are multiplying, not adding or subtracting.

Double of 6 is 12.
🧠 Think: “Times 2.”

Twice As

Two times a number.
Twice as means two times bigger.
👉 Example:
Twice as many as 7 is 14.
🧠 Think: “Multiply by 2.”
